— BAYERN RETAIN THE EUROPEAN CUP, BEATING LEEDS UNITED 2-0 IN THE FINAL IN PARIS, WITH“ BULLE“ ROTH AND GERD MÜLLER GETTING THE GOALS.
BAYERN GAME
Party chic: FCB celebrated in lederhosen for the first time in 1980.
— On the way to a European Cup hat-trick, the semi-finals feature a clash of giants. Bayern draw 1-1 in the first leg at Real Madrid, where Paul Breitner is now playing, in front of 111,000 spectators. FCB win the second leg 2-0, with Gerd Müller scoring all of the Reds‘ goals.
— The end of an era. Franz Beckenbauer leaves FC Bayern to join New York Cosmos.
— Things are not going well for FC Bayern in the league, cup and European Cup, but Gerd Müller is still crowned top scorer in the Bundesliga for the seventh time with 24 goals. At the end of the season, he also moves to the USA.
— Led by Paul Breitner and Sepp Maier, the team rebel against president Wilhelm Neudecker. They want to prevent his preferred candidate, former 1860 player Max Merkel, from being appointed the new head coach. The revolt is successful. Merkel is not hired and Neudecker resigns. Uli Hoeneß becomes general manager of FC Bayern.
— FC Bayern win the league for the first time in six years. The men from Munich are led by the brilliant duo of Paul Breitner and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, known as Breitnigge. For the first time, we celebrate the title in lederhosen on the town hall balcony.
— As in the previous year, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge wins the Ballon d’ Or. Paul Breitner comes second.
— In the final of the DFB Cup against 1. FC Nürnberg, Dieter Hoeneß suffers a cut to his head in the 13th minute but plays on with a head bandage. Nürnberg are 2-0 up at the break, but FC Bayern turn the game around. The final goal in the 4-2 win comes courtesy of a Hoeneß header, complete with blood stained turban.
— Udo Lattek replaces Pál Csernai and becomes head coach of FC Bayern for the second time.
— LOTHAR MATTHÄUS IS THE FIRST NEW SIGNING IN FCB HISTORY TO BREAK THE ONE MILLION DEUTSCHMARK TRANSFER FEE BARRIER. IT TURNS OUT TO BE A GOOD DEAL. IN THE SAME YEAR, KARL-HEINZ RUMMENIGGE MOVES TO INTER MILAN FOR WHAT WAS THEN A RECORD FEE OF DM11 MILLION. IN ONE FELL SWOOP, FCB IS DEBT-FREE – AND HAS REMAINED SO TO THIS DAY.
— Udo Lattek‘ s team are young and lack big names, which makes it all the more surprising that FC Bayern top the Bundesliga table from the second to the final matchday and are crowned champions ahead of Werder Bremen. It is the dawn of a golden age. FC Bayern go on to become champions five times in six years.
— On Matchday 33, Werder Bremen are awarded a penalty against FC Bayern three minutes from time. The score is 0-0 and Werder have a two-point lead in the table. If Michael Kutzop converts the penalty, Bremen are champions. But Kutzop only hits the post. Four days later, FCB win, Bremen lose, and Bayern take the title thanks to their superior goal difference.
There it is: In 1974, FCB won“ Ol’ Big Ears” for the first and by no means last time.
— Udo Lattek wraps up his second hat-trick of titles( after the 1972, 1973 and 1974 championships). With their tenth league title, FCB overtake previous record champions 1. FC Nürnberg( nine titles).
— After a lacklustre season, Lattek‘ s successor Jupp Heynckes revamps the team. Stars such as Brehme, Matthäus, Michael Rummenigge and Jean-Marie Pfaff leave, while talents such as Olaf Thon, Stefan Reuter and Roland Grahammer arrive. The young team pull off the” Miracle of Milan“ in the UEFA Cup round of 16, when they beat Inter Milan 3-1 in the second leg after losing 2-0 at home.
— In the first round of the DFB Cup against Eintracht Frankfurt, Klaus Augenthaler has the ball just inside his own half. He looks up briefly and takes a shot. After flying 49.50 metres, the ball dips into the goal behind Eintracht goalkeeper Uli Stein. Augenthaler‘ s goal is voted“ Goal of the Month“,“ Goal of the Year” and later“ Goal of the Decade”.
— SIX BAYERN PLAYERS ARE IN FRANZ BECKENBAUER‘ S SQUAD FOR THE WORLD CUP IN ITALY. KLAUS AUGENTHALER, JÜRGEN KOHLER, HANS PFLÜGLER, STEFAN REUTER, OLAF THON AND RAIMOND AUMANN ARE CROWNED WORLD CHAMPIONS.
— In the European Cup, FC Bayern reach the semi-final against Red Star Belgrade. After an unlucky 2-1 home defeat, the men from Munich are 2-1 up in the second leg with seconds to go, only for Klaus Augenthaler to score an own goal in the 90th minute. Auge retires at the end of the season, as one of our true greats.
