The Game that changed the world

By Brody Gilbert

It was many years ago, a time few remember, the ancient year..

2008. An unknown game developer, Markus (or notch) began work on a game known as Ruby Dung. It was never finished and never shown, but several models were later reused.

The Biggest inspiration was Infiniminer from april 2009, a game(inspired itself by Team fortress and Infinifrag) that involved teams collecting minerals to earn points, but after enough players joined, more of them began to mess around, and build stuff.

The game was discontinued in early may due to hackers, but around the same time Notch began work on a similar game. Titled……Cave Game.

Cave games development progressed quick, and a tech test was released. After some more work, it was shown off to the public via another test, and people liked it. They didn’t like the name, so it was renamed to Minecraft, and given a logo.

Notch however, preferred to call it Minecraft, Order of the Stone. This was later changed to simply Minecraft.

Once the game was publicly released, it was dubbed, Classic, to differentiate it from Cave Game. The game was still basic, but a small community of followers loved it. The game progressed rapidly, moving through various stages of development, gaining new features as it went. Indev, Infdev, until reaching Alpha in early 2010.

A small group of around 100 or so fans gathered unofficially at a local site in mid 2010, to discuss minecraft. They dubbed it, Minecon 2010.

Once Minecraft entered beta, it really blew Up. Everyone wanted to jump on the bandwagon. Every lets player Watched and played it 4 dayz!!! Then, the game got a full release.and an ending…..which no one Liked, but still. It got so crazy that an official Minecon was booked, and happened. Minecon 2011(to differenciate it from the 2010 gathering) and it was HUUUUGGGGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After this, the pc version progressed in leaps and bounds. But there was more. An Xbox 360 version was soon released, followed by pocket edition, and ps3. Another Minecon followed. Then an Xbox One and ps4 version. And another Minecon. And another. Then it got reallllly crazy. WII U, Switch, Windows 10, 4k, Pi, Educational, Story Mode, realm, 3ds, vita, oculus, Minecon , Minecon California, Minecon Earth, java, bedrock edition…OKAY HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH!?!?!

After all the chaos, we did get Minecraft Story mode, a very high quality game, by telltale. Notch, the original creator, had progressively less involvement from 2011 onward, and by 2014, decided to sell the game to Microsoft for 2 Billion dollars, and left minecraft.

As for the future of Minecraft…..well………who knows.

With the massive bedrock edition mergings, new episodes of story mode, more mods then ever, a shrinking fanbase, and of course, DEAD BUSH, no one can truly predict, the future of the game called
