Another day in the Life (Continued)
by Jon D’Amore
Compared to many, it was easy for me to acclimate to the lifestyle and geographic change. After a
couple of decades of hanging out and working in L.A., I had a great base of family and friends while I
developed my craft as a writer. It wasn’t long after writing the manuscript for my memoir, THE BOSS
ALWAYS SITS IN THE BACK, that I dove into the world of screenwriting and quickly became a Script Doctor
for several film production companies and movie studios.
So to get back to the question of, “How did I wind up in the entertainment industry?” the best
response I can give is, “It’s as if I didn’t have any other choice. By the time I was five I knew I wanted to live
in the Entertainment Capitol of the World…and once I was trained as a musician, I put that talent to work and
worked hard to make the best of it in the place that made me the happiest.”
I don’t recommend a career in the entertainment industry for everyone. I’ve known a lot more people
who tried and failed than those who succeeded. And of those who left L.A. disillusioned…more of them had
true talent than those who found profitable careers. Their only problem was that they didn’t have the ability
to network, schmooze, and learn the in’s-and-out’s of doing “business.” Being in the entertainment industry
isn’t simply reading lines and looking good in front of a camera, or having the talent and intelligence to work
behind the camera, or writing an intriguing script. Learning “the business” of the entertainment industry is
harder than achieving a career in it. It’s not easy. But if you have the dream, the ambition, the training and
the talent (along with an almost never-ending stream of money to survive on in the event you don’t achieve
your goal for several years)…give it a try.
You never know. You just never know…..
