it a shot, like if you feel like you can’t, you really can,” he ex-
plained. “Just don’t wait until you get to a very dark point in
your life like I did.”
James said he doesn’t have many followers — mostly because
“I’m terrible at hashtags,” he said — but he still has people
following him for advice and motivation, which makes it worth-
while.
“They use my story to fuel themselves. I’ve got people that re-
ally like seeing where I’m at and where I’m going,” he explained.
But he acknowledges it can be scary, especially because it
takes a while before anyone sees results.
“The biggest thing is just taking the first step, as scary as it
is, as terrifying as it absolutely is, because you don’t think you’ll
succeed by taking that first step,” he said. “I think that’s what
a lot of people are a little bit afraid of with starting out, is that
they won’t see results, but then they don’t realize their seden-
tary lifestyle is what … causes you to stagnate so much.”
He also admitted a lot of people, at least in the beginning,
don’t realize that failing out when doing sets isn’t always bad,
and it’s OK to lower the amount of weight.
“I do 10 pound sets when in reality, like for a military press,
I can do a 45 pound military press without a problem, but with
reps for extended amounted of sets, you’re going for endurance,
not so much strength, and I think that’s what a lot of people
wind up forgetting, is you’re not trying to max out all the time,”
he explained. “If you’re hitting 60 percent of your strength abil-
ity while working out, you’re doing just fine.”
For those who are worried about not having a partner to help
watch their form or give advice, James recommended research-
ing exercises on Google or YouTube, or even asking another

person at the gym.
“Honest to God, people at the gym are some of the nicest …
people you’ll ever really meet,” he said. “It’s very rare that you’ll
actually meet the stereotypical gym bro Chad that’s there to put
you down.”
There were multiple people who helped him over the years, he
explained, he’s even befriended fellow gym members on social
media.
