MAA’s Fall Webinars (continued from p.1)
OcTOBeR 19 – 29, 2020
Rope Tension and Forces at the Anchor When Rigging
Rigging trees can be dangerous. Large pieces of cut wood, swinging from a
rope, create significant forces on the anchor point in the tree. If the forces are
large enough, the anchor or the whole tree could fail, which will likely cause
serious injuries and damage. So how do you know whether the piece you’re
rigging will cause forces too large for the tree to withstand? A team at UMass
has studied the forces in different parts of rigging systems. Dr. Brian Kane will
provide some guidance on how to reduce the odds of failure of the system in
this presentation.
Brian Kane, Ph.D. • MAA Professor of Arboriculture
UMASS Amherst
Over the past three years, Brian has conducted several experiments
to measure forces in climbing and rigging systems to try
to help arborists understand how much force anchor points must endure when
working in trees.

Growing Trees Near Pavement
Trees in areas surrounded by pavement often have inhospitable rooting environments,
which shorten their useful life expectancy. Join us as we compare
tree growth using different soil treatment options near concrete pavement.
You’ll learn methods to use in urban planting sites to ensure beneficial tree
health and growth outcomes.
Tom Smiley, Ph.D. • Senior Arboriculture Researcher
Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories
A leading researcher at the Bartlett Tree Research Lab in
Charlotte, NC, and an adjunct professor of Urban Forestry at
Clemson University, Dr. Smiley is renowned for his contributions to the field
of arboriculture.
