Happy Fall y’all! What a great way to celebrate the season with apples and our
Safety Saves & Demo Day. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did, visiting
vendors, reconnecting with colleagues and making new connections. As always,
Dr. John Ball gave an excellent review of safety standards and their importance to
all of us as arborists.
This is my last President’s Message. I have been proud to serve as your president
and am enthusiastically looking forward to what our incoming president, Trum-
bull Barrett, and board of directors have in store for the MAA. With help from the
management team, I am positive our organization will stay strong and continue
to grow.
As one of my final thoughts in my role as president, I want to bring forward the
importance of women in arboriculture. I sometimes forget that who I am and
what I have achieved as a woman in this profession is significant. People, espe-
cially aspiring young women, look to me with their own futures, and what they
can achieve, in mind. I am grateful to be who I am and where I am. We women
of the industry have gotten where we are first and foremost by being good
arborists. Thank you to all of my fellow strong, brave, intelligent female col-
leagues for providing a place for women in arboriculture. Thank you to all of
the men who have continued to encourage and support us as equals.
That said, women and men working in the field of arbori-
culture to better our environment is an amazing thing. We
do, however, have to remember that we are opposite sexes.
I ask all the men out there to remember to ask permission.
Silence does not mean yes. Not hearing no does not mean
yes. Respect each other out there every minute, of every
hour, of every day.
