INSPIRED-SUCCEED & FEARLESS YOUTH ASSOCIATION are carrying out collaborative research into BAME community perceptions of stop & search culture in Nottinghamshire.
Nottinghamshire Police has successfully undergone major transformation in recent years to promote fair, intelligence driven stop & search. However, the issue of to trust between BAME communities
and the police, and subsequent barriers
to effective policing is ongoing. To provide a clearer picture o community perceptions towards police stop and search procedure, and hopefully inform policy change regarding this, we are collecting data on people's experiences and public perceptions of fairness in stop and search procedure,
- Of respondents who have been stopped and searched; 25% felt targeted 25% felt angry 13% felt disrespected
- 50% of respondents reported that police explanations of why they were carrying out stop & search were unclear
- 70% reported being initially stopped & searched on suspicion of carrying a dangerous weapon. 0% of these respondents reported actually committing or being convicted of such offence
- 45% of respondents have been stopped & searched a total of 2-5 times,- whilst 3% of respondents have been stopped and search between 15-20 times
-83% of respondents reported feeling discriminated against by Nottinghamshire police
