Community

Communities cherish their privacy very highly, and since the postcode of each individual was necessary to map them on the wards, collecting data was challenging mainly due to initial mistrust when they were approached by the team. It is fair to state that this process was made easier when the team approached the community in places where they felt secure, such as church or specific African events; therefore, the biggest limitation of the research was that the majority of the surveys were collected on the streets, and compliance was not high. From a total population of 326 individuals interviewed, 299 have an African background, which number our report focused on.

The scope of the GAIN research was to have an initial picture of the African Community living in the city of Nottingham, England. For this purpose, a physical questionnaire and an online questionnaire were developed. The first was used for a field research that was carried out to map the community across the city. Using the wards as guidance, the team walked through the main roads of every ward approaching people in the streets, and the results were very variable in quality and quantity.

The majority of the interviewee population has a residence status of 48.8% and 22.4% with limited leave to remain, while 18.1% preferred not to discuss their status.

The other areas that were examined include the living arrangement of the interviewees, their residency status in the UK, employment and religious beliefs.
