Ce n’ est pas notre écriture cinématographique, mais c’ est justement pour cela que c’ est intéressant. J’ ai rencontré à Berlin pour le festival du cinéma en 2006( Charlotte Rampling était alors présidente du jury de la Berlinale), un grand producteur de Bollywood, Yash Chopra( membre de ce jury). Il m’ avait demandé si je serais d’ accord pour jouer dans l’ une de ses productions. Je dis toujours « pourquoi pas? » en réponse à ce genre de proposition. Tout dépend du rôle et de l’ histoire. Bollywood serait pour moi une expérience originale. Mais malheureusement, mon ami Yash Chopra est décédé en 2012, et l’ occasion ne s’ est jamais représentée. »
Pour conclure notre entretien, et perpétuer avec le sourire cette tradition d’ accueil mauricienne, nous avons entrouvert la porte d’ un tournage ici-même, sur l’ île. Et l’ actrice aux plus de 70 films ne dirait pas non à une telle expérience! « Le cinéma africain vit une belle révolution, il est très inventif. Si je devais avoir une proposition de tourner à Maurice, je répondrais la même chose: pourquoi pas? Pour moi ce n’ est pas une question d’ argent. Je peux dire oui à un réalisateur qui a un petit budget, si son ambition est grande. Je suis audacieuse, j’ aime l’ aventure. Comme je vous l’ ai dit: je suis à contre-courant … et tourner à Maurice est une perspective plutôt agréable! J’ ai d’ ailleurs déjà joué dans un film dont l’ action se passait sur une île. C’ était en République Dominicaine pour le film de Laurent Cantet Vers le Sud( en 2005). J’ ai beaucoup aimé l’ ambiance du tournage. Tout est toujours plus intense dans une île. Oui, pourquoi pas un jour à Maurice. C’ est une belle idée ». Azim Moollan ou David Constantin pour diriger l’ immense Charlotte Rampling dans les rues de Port-Louis … en voilà une belle affiche!
Nominated for the 2016 Oscars and honoured during the last Berlinale for her performance in the movie 45 Years, Charlotte Rampling has travelled the world and stood the test of time without any faux-pas. From her beginnings in the cinema with the giants Luchino Visconti and Nagisa Ōshima, to more important roles for Woody Allen, Robert Mitchum, Sidney Lumet, Claude Lelouch, Jacques Deray or even François Ozon, Charlotte Rampling has worked with the greatest. Between two shootings, she has sometimes taken a few breaks to treat herself to a trip to Mauritius! Memories:“ I love Mauritius a lot. I’ ve visited the island several times. With my husband, Jean-Noël, we like to take the plane from Paris on the 24 th or 31 st December. I like going against the flow. Around these dates not only are there always a lot of seats available, but the flight is also very pleasant. We have champagne with the crew and the other passengers while wishing each other a Merry Christmas or a Happy New Year. It’ s rather jolly! We once went South, at the Dinarobin Hotel, just opposite the famous Le Morne mountain, and on another occasion, we went North near Grand Baie, at Paradise Cove. The recollections of my holidays in Mauritius are mostly about the hotels, which are among the most beautiful in the world, the wonderful beaches, and an ocean boasting of an exceptional colour.
However, that’ s not the end of it … When she digs a little deeper; the memories of this British film star adopted by France go beyond the usual postcard cliché. As our conversation unfolds, it becomes obvious that Mauritians have a special place in her heart:“ Mauritius is much more than just the sun.
