1 MES LIVRES / MY BOOKS
Puisqu’il faut choisir, j’en citerais deux : Belle
du seigneur, d’Albert Cohen, et Beloved, de
Toni Morrison. Le premier est une histoire
d’amour, de passion, de mythe, de mort
qui me prend au corps à chaque fois que
je le lis, parce que Solal et Ariane, ces êtres
solaires, vont s’aimer et se détruire tandis
que le monde se désagrège autour d’eux.
Le second est le roman sublime d’une mère
qui tue sa fi lle plutôt que de la laisser vivre
dans l’esclavage, mais cette enfant morte
va revenir, chargée d’un terrible reproche.
Poétique et hanté.
Since I have to make a choice, I will choose
two: Belle du Seigneur from Albert Cohen,
and Beloved from Toni Morrison. Th e fi rst
is a story, fi lled with love, passion, myth and
death. Th is is what I feel each time I read
it, because Solal and Ariane, these blooming
characters, will love and destroy each other
while the world crumbles around them. Th e
second is the exquisite novel of a mother
who kills her daughter rather than to let her
live in slavery, but this dead child will return,
carrying a devastating accusation. Poetic but
haunted.
2 MA VILLE / MY CITY
Port-Louis est le lieu qui a véritablement
nourri mon imaginaire et qui n’a cessé
de m’off rir ses visages et ses histoires.
Adolescente, j’accompagnais mon père
lorsqu’il y avait des rendez-vous et, depuis la
voiture, j’observais. J’élaborais des histoires à
partir des passants, des regards, des gestes, et
c’est ainsi qu’est née Lina, dans La cathédrale,
et Paule, dans Rue la Poudrière. Lieu plus
ancien que son âge, Port-Louis a son rythme
particulier et une sorte de violence sensuelle
qui me fascinent.
Port Louis is the place which truly fed
my imagination and which continually
entrusted me with its faces and stories. As
a teenager, I went along with my father
when he had meetings, and from the car, I
admired my surroundings. I made up stories
inspiring myself from the bystanders,
gazes, gestures, and this is how Lina was
born, in The cathedral, and Paule, in Reu
de La Poudrière. A city looking older than
it actually is, Port Louis has this unique
cadenza and a kind of sultry violence which
intrigues me.
3 MA MUSIQUE / MY MUSIC
Le Stabat Mater de Vivaldi… Pour la plus
douloureuse des mères et pour la manière
dont la musique et la voix s’allient afi n de
nous faire partager cet instant de désolation
et d’off rande de Marie tenant le Christ
dans ses bras et sachant que tout l’a menée
jusqu’ici : l’instant où elle doit accepter la
mort du fi ls humain et la naissance du fi ls
divin.

greatest mother of them all and for the way
the harmony and the voice connect in order
to transpose that moment in time, when
Mary full of sorrow and off ering, held Jesus
Christ, conscious of everything that led
her to: the moment she has to accept the
sacrifi ce of her human son for the divine son
to arise.
4 MON CINÉMA / MY CINEMA
J’ai des goûts éclectiques, qui vont des fi lms
d’auteur aux blockbusters hollywoodiens !
J’aime Manhattan de Woody Allen et One
flew over the cuckoo’s nest (Vol au-dessus
d’un nid de coucou) de Milos Forman, mais
aussi Guide de Vijay Anand et El Orfanato
(L’Orphelinat) de J. A. Bayona. J’aime les
scénarios qui m’interpellent, et je suis de
plus en plus attentive à la façon dont un fi lm
est écrit tout autant qu’à la façon dont il est
fi lmé.
I have eclectic taste, which varies from the
film d’auteur to Hollywood’s blockbusters!
I love Manhattan by Woody Allen and
One flew over the cuckoo’s nest by Milos
Forman, but also Guide by Vijay Anand
and El Orfanato (The orphanage) by
J.A. Bayona. I like scripts that strike my
interest, I pay close attention to the way a
movie is written and even more to the way
it is shot.
5 MON MAURICE / MY MAURITIUS
Mon Maurice est un lieu de contradictions,
à la fois empreint de la beauté d’un lever
de soleil sur les champs de canne, de la
désolation de mon village natal, Trois
Boutiques, aujourd’hui presque un oublié du
développement, de la richesse des artistes
mauriciens, écrivains, peintres, dramaturges,
musiciens, qui se battent pour survivre et
exister, et de la corruption qui gangrène la
société depuis les plus hautes sphères. Ce
sont ces paradoxes-là qui charpentent mes
romans.
My Mauritius, is a place of profound
inconsistencies, it is at the same time
marked by the refl ection of the rising sun
on the sugar-cane fi eld, and of my home
town (Trois Boutiques) juggling between
desolation and overlooked development. It
is a place where the local artists: writers,
painters, dramatists, musicians struggle for
the survival and recognition of their art, but
also where corruption plagues the society
from higher up. My novels are inspired by
this paradoxical Mauritius.
