LUXURY INDIAN OCEAN
DÉCOUVERTES
Corals, a priority for Constance
Moofushi Constance Halaveli’s
environmentally responsible policy
The South Ari Atoll is reputed to be one
of the best dive spots in the Maldives. The
ocean around the Constance Moofushi
Hotel is full of brightly coloured aquatic
gems. Just a few yards from the hotel, the
reefs are home to a large variety of exotic
creatures, including lionfish, eels, manta
rays, turtles, snappers and whale sharks. Urgent action is needed to protect the
planet, and since 2018, the hotel has
undertaken to recycle all plastic bottles used
on the island, with the help of Parley for the
Oceans. As the island is too small to have a
recycling plant, the plastic waste is sent to
Germany where it is used to create textile
fibres, stuffing, floor coverings, baskets
and other items. In this way, Constance
Halaveli is able to recycle 50,000 kilos of
plastic each year. As the Hotel’s General
Manager, Tangi Le Grand, explains, “For us,
this was a logical and unanimous decision.
Constance Halaveli is a jewel in the heart
of the sea and we do all we can to preserve
an environment that is so breathtakingly
beautiful.”
These species might no longer be there
but for the tireless efforts of 25-year-
old Jasmine Stone, the hotel’s marine
biologist. Passionate about protecting
the environment, she is actively involved
in the restoration of the coral reefs. She
also works to encourage environmental
awareness amongst hotel guests and runs
sessions in local schools on marine issues.
The submerged structures she has created
to facilitate coral growth have contributed
to restoring the atoll’s ecosystem, which
attracts a rich diversity of fauna and flora,
from anemones to soft coral as well as
brightly coloured fish.
This may well help to explain why the
hotel’s dive school has received the PADI
Award for Best Dive Centre in the Maldives
for seven years in a row!
Alongside this, the hotel works hard to
protect the environment in every way and
to encourage responsible activity. The hotel
team regularly organises lagoon-cleaning
sessions in order to remove waste which has
been washed up on the hotel’s shorelines,
while its dive centre, TGI Maldives, has just
received the Green Fins certification. This
international recognition exists to promote
environmentally-respectful diving behaviour
amongst guests and the local population.
