En 2005 , la fondation Living Oceans et ses partenaires ont étudié les effets dramatiques du phénomène tropical El Niño-Oscillation australe ( ENOA ) sur les récifs coralliens de l ’ océan Indien . Selon leur étude , l ’ ENOA a contribué à la perte d ’ entre 60 et 90 % de la couverture corallienne aux Seychelles . Il était donc nécessaire de lancer un plan d ’ action , « mais pour protéger les coraux , il faut savoir où ils se trouvent », souligne le Dr . Sam Purkis , responsable scientifique de la fondation .
Living Oceans a donc cartographié les îles seychelloises et leurs récifs coralliens . Au total , onze cartes en haute résolution ont été mises à la disposition du gouvernement seychellois et du public , afin d ’ aider les acteurs dans leurs efforts . « J ’ aimerais être plus positif , ajoute-t-il , mais le dernier épisode de blanchiment aux Seychelles date de 2019 et les coraux prennent des décennies pour s ’ en remettre . La situation est très alarmante ».
In 2005 , the Living Oceans Foundation and its partners carried an in-depth investigation on the dramatic effects of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation ( ENOA ) climate phenomenon on the coral reefs of the Indian Ocean . The study alarmingly reveals that ENOA has contributed to the loss of 60 to 90 % of the coral cover in the Seychelles . While launching an action plan has become of paramount importance , Dr Sam Purkis , Scientific Director of the foundation points out : “ To protect corals , you need to know where to find them .”
Consequently , the Living Oceans Foundation has carefully mapped out the islands of the archipelago and their coral reefs . The local government , as well as the public , had been provided with eleven highdefinition maps to assist the stakeholders in their efforts . “ I wish we could be more positive ,” he adds , “ but the situation is quite disheartening : corals take decades to recover , and the last bleaching incident in the Seychelles occurred in 2019 …”
