Lutheran Church of Mahomet, The Invitation 2019 Prayer Invitation (1) | Page 9
I spent the summer of 2010
working at Voyageurs Lu-
theran Ministries in north-
ern Minnesota, which is an
outdoor ministry. My main
job was as Day Camp Coor-
dinator, which meant that I
organized counselors to
travel to churches and host a
simplified, localized version
of camp on church campuses
for kids too young to go to
Lake Hiawatha or Lake Ver-
million. But, when I myself
wasn’t needed to be physi-
cally present at a Day Camp
site, I found myself as just a
regular counselor hosting a
cabin of kids on one of our
two lakes. One of the kids in my cabin
grew close to me over the
course of the camp and was
sad to say goodbye at the
end of the week. For the
next summer’s brochure,
there was a great picture of
me and this boy talking, me
on my knees so that we’d be
at eye level with each other.
In the background were a lot
of boys and girls meeting up
with their parents after a
week of camp, running and
enjoying the lakeside for a
few last minutes before re-
turning home. But, in the
foreground, this little boy
and I were having a deep
conversation.
One week, I had a cabin filled
with 2nd-3rd graders, all of
whom seemed crazy—fun
and great—but also crazy! If you could bring that pic-
ture to life and hear our
conversation, you would
have heard us talking about
