In the latter part of June, the Lutheran Church of Mahomet sent
nine high schoolers and three adults to join up with thirty-one
thousand other ELCA high schoolers for four days of worship,
fellowship, and community service in Houston, TX. While we
were there, we visited United Against Human Trafficking
(UAHT) to learn about the 40 million people around the world
who are bound in sex or slave labor. Together we mourned our
collusion with the systems that preserve this trade and learned
about how to read the signs around us to prevent further en-
slavement. At the end of our time, UAHT invited all of us present
to participate in a nation-wide art installation called the Red
Sand Project.
We moved from a chapel with walls and ceilings of glass to a
grassy university campus, armed with chalk and boxes of red
sand. After UAHT distributed these materials to everyone gath-
