Yamato Colony Elementary School is the newest of the three ( 3 ) elementary schools . The exterior walls for all permanent buildings are pre-cast concrete walls . All the permanent buildings have large volumes and skylights that are motorized and can open . These design features allow the existing campus to set a new standard of quality for other elementary schools . However , the associated high quality comes at a price , and this is perhaps why the campus lacks a permanent library building .
The existing library is a triple-wide portable building . Too small and too dark , the current library is a space used more to house books . The library building location on the school site is good , but the size of the space is too small . The library needs to be larger and more spacious . Areas for student study and collaboration are needed both inside and outside the library .
A library for an elementary school should range between 5 to 6 square STACKS feet for each enrolled student , so student capacity drives the size of the needed 107support spaces . The existing library is about 3.5 square feet per enrolled student . This supports the argument that the existing library is too small for the student population .
At the Staff and the Community Meeting some discussion occurred about the idea of keeping the portable and adding on a new building addition to make the library more spacious and functional . This building addition idea was not acceptable . The staff and community indicated that a new spacious library building would be the best solution ; as one of the community members stated “ if you are going to do something , you might as well do it right and build the right library and not try and patch onto a poor library ”.

The proposed building program and library floor plan indicates a floor UNISEX area of

3,250 square feet , which is about 5.6 square feet for each enrolled pupil . An additional 1,000 Square Feet exterior patio is also included on the north side of the building for a shaded study area .
