Environmental Analysis Continued
In many parts of India menstruation is considered to be dirty and impure, some women are even prohibited from continuing their day to day activities such as daily chores or even being around family until she is “purified” (Garg and Anand, 2015). Some women are even unable to enter the kitchen as some believe that the body emits a smell or ray during menstruation that can spoil the food (Garg and Anand, 2015). These taboos and lack of access to proper sanitary pads has force 23% of girls in India to drop out of school. Women have become so desperate that many have resorted to using old cloths, ashes, newspapers, dried leaves, as well as husk sand which can lead to various health issues (Garg and Anand, 2015). These social stigmas may create a threat to Lunapads, as many women may be too shy to seek out new products. Additionally, as women tend to be more embarrassed to speak of these issues, it may be hard to rely on word of mouth within the communities to spread the brand name. Although Lunapads also has a huge opportunity in the market as the demand for safe, and reliable sanitary pads is very high.
Since the Lunapads are reusable, women will only have to make a one-time purchase every few years as they have the potential to last for 10 years. The value that the product is able to provide these women will be worth a higher one time cost to the. Furthermore, the pad inserts do not resemble any sanitary products, it simply looks like a piece of cloth so women will not have to worry about hiding them and can hang them out to dry once they are washed.
Environmental
The physical and social infrastructure in India acts as a major barrier to distribution, which creates a threat in the environment for Lunapads. Social infrastructure is mainly compromised of education and health, which increases productivity within the country. India’s population has a very large concentration of young people who aren’t receiving sufficient education (Agrawal, 2015). This leads to increased poverty and impedes economic growth.
