By Aaron Chee , Chia Kai Tiak , Joseph Tan and Kenneth Koh
A playful primary school boy becomes Junior Josephian . Eng Wei does not let others ' impression of him deter him from serving wholeheartedly as a leader , and being ever willing to sacrifice his time and put in the effort .
The joy within was short-lived . Letting his guard down , he recounted the surprise expressed by his peers upon discovering the revelation at the Inaugural Service .
Khoo Eng Wei from class 201 ( 2012 ) was named Junior Josephian 2012 during the Inaugural Service on 14 January 2013 . Beaming brightly , he stepped forward on stage to receive the award .
The Junior Josephian Award is presented to a Secondary Two student who has displayed allround excellence in academics and co-curricular activities , while at the same time being a man of integrity and service to others . A passionate and principled leader with a sense of responsibility Eng Wei said , “ What matters most to me , is responsibility . Whether our actions are right or wrong , we need to be responsible [ for them ], face the music and accept all consequences . After which , we need to seek alternatives to improve the situation or seek solutions for the problem caused .”
He feels honoured . Though aware he was nominated for the award , he did not expect to be the eventual recipient since he did not regard himself as the best in his cohort . Moreover he considered the series of interviews very challenging . A faithful Josephian , Eng Wei strives
to incorporate the spirit of SJI : Faith , Service and Community , into his daily activities . One activity in which he practises community is the basketball games he occasionally plays at the nearby Tanglin Community Club . He believes a sense of community pervades in sports hence stating , “ I will try to promote the spirit of community as much as possible through the games I play every day .”
Eng Wei contributed actively to the school community during his first two years in SJI . In Secondary One he assumed the role of Vice-Chairman for his class 101 and thereafter , was
“
What matters most to me , is responsibility .
Whether our actions are right or wrong , we need to be responsible ( for them ), face the music and accept all consequences .
