The Road to SYF 2025
By Ms Ho Ki Hui
The Singapore Youth Festival( SYF) is more than just a national platform for artistic competition. It is a celebration of student creativity, expression and the deep learning that comes through the arts. At the heart of SYF is the belief that the performing arts can transform, connect and uplift. For the students of our Performing Arts CCAs, SYF 2025 was the culmination of months of preparation, sacrifice, and growth. Whether through the haunting stillness of a dramatic pause, the disciplined precision of a musical ensemble, or the joyful rhythm of a strummed chord, each performance reflected the heart and soul of our Josephians.
The team met early to settle their jitters, seeking comfort in one another and encouragement from their leaders. Student conductor Ethan Lee led the group in prayer while President Gregory Tan reminded everyone to stay positive.
When the first notes of El Choclo rang out, the weight of anxiety lifted. The ensemble found their rhythm and joy in the music. Their second piece, Samba of the Sun, tested their control and tempo, but they delivered it with flair and unity. The standing ovation they received was the ultimate affirmation of their efforts.
THE ROAD TO SYF 2025
This year, our Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, Vocal Ensemble, Drama Club, and Guitar Ensemble brought home an impressive four Distinction awards and one Accomplishment award; testament not only to their talent, but to their resilience and unity. Yet beyond accolades, their stories remind us that the SYF journey is as meaningful as its outcome.
For the Guitar Ensemble, the SYF experience was a personal test of nerves and unity. In the lead-up to performance day, anxiety ran high.
