really teach effectively and connect with young people’ s minds if they have not addressed these deeper issues of the heart first.” Similarly, on the subject of coaching as a branch of counselling, she is at pains to explain the difference.“ Coaching differs fundamentally from counselling in that it derives its effectiveness from relating reallife experiences to the young person so that practical solutions can be found in partnership with the child and their parents.”

Enjoying time away from work
With a proven track record of turning disaffected learners around, Ms. Liu observed a 100 % success rate whenever parents worked alongside her and the child on an individual learning plan.“ If you help with the soft skills first, the motivation to study will follow.” But what about the factors outside of a teacher’ s control?“ Well, we need to enable all stakeholders to encourage a child to develop their executive functioning skills, to avoid over-planning their time and to set realistic expectations.” Ms. Liu shrugs, and with that our discussion is over.
Both of our interviewees took a detour onto a road‘ less travelled by’. Undoubtedly, Ms. Liu’ s journey to fields outside of the school environment contributed to her clarity and confidence as a professional. Upon meeting Mr. Tan, one is also struck by a certain wisdom emanating from him, a wisdom borne out of experience down a less commonly travelled path, perhaps. While both are educated professionals, their sense of purpose and calm confidence cannot be found in a textbook alone. As we continue on our journey of exploring growth and possibilities this year, maybe it would help us all to remember the many and varied opportunities available when we take a detour or two along the way.
