The Power of Words This dedication to self-improvement reveals itself in one of Brother Paul’ s most remarkable gifts – his masterful command of language. As a Brother President in SJI, he has consistently used words in powerful ways that reach far beyond mere communication. His prayers and sharings marry simplicity with profound beauty, weaving impactful messages that touch the hearts of educators and students alike.
13 years after completing his first degree, reflecting his commitment to educational service.
Life’ s journey next led Br Paul to St. Xavier’ s Institution, Penang, where he served as principal for fifteen remarkable years.“ They( Brother Visitors) threw away the keys because nobody else would do it,” he jokes, revealing the unexpected longevity of his tenure. The early years weren’ t easy –“ At one time I had midlife crisis, wondering‘ Where is the goodness when I am struggling with running the school?’” Fortunately, he found support through a circle of fellow principals who worked together and got involved in the Penang Conference of School Principals. This collaboration opened new horizons such as international learning journeys to Singapore, United Kingdom, Japan and China.“ That’ s how I got myself involved in doing new things, and then suddenly I realised how management and teaching and learning connected,” he reflected.
Continuous Learning and Service Beyond Self Throughout his career, Br Paul has embodied the principle of lifelong learning.“ I still read new books,” he shares, noting his practice of keeping up with educational developments and donating his books to colleagues. This commitment to growth allowed him to navigate curriculum changes and implement innovative programmes.
One of his proudest achievements was establishing a bakery programme for students who struggled academically. More than just vocational training, the bakery program provided
profound life lessons.“ For students who are not doing well in studies, we know how they feel – small self-esteem.” The bakery programme exemplified Br Paul’ s commitment to holistic education that empowers.“ Baking helps them to give themselves esteem because they can do something for the family. They could bake cakes, pastries. They could do many other things,” he explains with obvious pride.
His dedication extended beyond the classroom. Br Paul became involved in national examination work and teaching literature. During one memorable Literature Festival, he brought Macbeth to life through culinary creations, making Shakespeare accessible through unexpected means. Yet he humbly insists,“ Those are not accomplishments in my life. They are part of my life as a religious Brother.”
The Continuing Story As Br Paul reflects while looking forward, his journey embodies this year’ s school theme of“ Celebrating Growth and Shaping Possibilities Together.” His narrative is not about personal accomplishments but about creating pathways for others— through innovative education, thoughtful leadership, and steady presence during changing times – as his prayers always remind. As SJI celebrates growth and shapes possibilities this year, Br Paul’ s life work offers a living blueprint— showing how patient dedication and genuine care can transform lives in ways that echo long after classroom bells fall silent.
