LUMEN | SJI X INTAN MUSEUM X HOTEL INDIGO PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLABORATION
SJI X Intan Museum X Hotel Indigo Photographic Collaboration
In June 2023 , SJI ’ s Photography CAS members collaborated with the Intan Museum and Hotel INDIGO Singapore Katong , an IHG Hotel . The aim of the project was to educate and inspire young , creative minds , and to weave together the rich heritage of Katong and Joo Chiat , along with the vibrant Peranakan culture .
The founder of the Intan Museum , Mr Alvin Yapp ( coincidentally an SJI alumnus ), volunteered to oversee the project . During the school holidays , students journeyed to 69 Joo Chiat Terrace for a hands-on lesson about the genesis of the museum , to peruse Mr Yapp ’ s eclectic collection of Peranakan artefacts , and to imbibe all things Straits Chinese . Mr Yapp also gave students a sample of the famed Nyonya Kueh , served in immaculate porcelain ware . Photography Ex-Co vice-chairman Leong Jhun Ying said that she was “ very impressed by the hospitality of the staff at Hotel Indigo , and we learnt Peranakan history from a very passionate Mr Alvin Yapp .”
Students explored the Joo Chiat / Katong area to take photographs of the architecture , which included a stopover at the famous colourful row of shophouses along Koon Seng Road . Some enthusiastic students also returned to District 15 to capture other nuances of the neighbourhood . Their efforts culminated in “ Capturing Katong : Youth Perspectives and Cultural Canvas ”, a photographic exhibition that illuminates the vivacious heritage and culture of the Katong Joo Chiat Neighbourhood - Singapore ’ s first heritage town . This series was on display from August 19 , 2023 to October 17 , 2023 , at the Pavilion of Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong . Central to this display are the photographs captured by the students of St . Joseph ’ s Institution . These images transport us through time , allowing us to experience the essence and dynamism of the Katong neighborhood .
