THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT SJI | LUMEN 19

The most significant place in my school to me is the Staff Room , which is located conveniently beside the school ’ s second staircase . That place is where I get advice from my teacher , be it through a lecture or a heart-to-heart talk , allowing me to learn a lot over the past two years ; it is also where I attend consultations with my teachers , where I get advice from my teachers and where I learn from the mistakes I make . The memory of this place will always be etched in my mind and it will occupy a special place in my heart .
When you enter the messy room cluttered with books , boxes , machines , cabinets and worksheets , you will see the heads of teachers lowered at their tables busy scribbling away and you will hear the sound of the red pen ticking or crossing answers on paper . At one corner of the Staff Room , the cluster of teachers chattering loudly is like the buzz of bees at work while at the other end , a line of cubicles houses teachers from the English department , with their heads bowed in deathly silence as they furiously work on the recent essays . One can almost hear the scratching of the red pen on the surface of the paper .
The sanitised scent of the spacious room is a reminder of the presence of COVID- 19 as a cleaner wipes the pristine surface of the furniture . As you take a few steps around the place , you will feel a gust of wind as teachers stride past you in a blur with stacks of worksheets in their hands . When you take a whiff of the air , the smell of freshly printed worksheets will seep past your mask into your nose . Most students will usually be standing near the exit of the staff room , locating their teacher ’ s pigeonhole with subtle movements of their heads . As you begin to leave the staff room , you will see many teachers with their eyebrows furrowed trying to think of an innovative and creative way to explain the concepts of certain topics to students who have yet to grasp them .

Lively with the jovial laughter of young men , the canteen is visited by all in SJI . Complementing the bright smiles of the stall vendors , a vast variety of meals present themselves to the famished students and staff . When the time for a break comes between lessons , students race like Olympic sprinters to come in the first place , winning their prize of having an earlier meal . Often , they will compete for the cold relief of ice cream on a swelteringly hot day , or perhaps a refreshing sports drink after a sweaty session of Physical Education . The soft , fluffy rice that has become a staple part of everyone ’ s diet is a familiar delight , appeasing the students ’ growling stomachs . It is a cultural hotpot , one that reflects SJI ’ s own multicultural and harmonious atmosphere . Nasi Padang is unfailingly a booming hit , and the recent Yong Tau Foo stall is not to be sniffed at , either .

I like the lunchtime jam because it makes the IB less stressful and interesting . Also , I like music , so it is very nice to have a few songs during lunchtime . I can also get the chance to enjoy the jam with my friends who may not be eating lunch with me .

I really like the library in SJI . It is a significant place to me . Firstly , it is the biggest ever school library I have seen . It has many genres of books that interest me . It also has very good librarians who help me to find some of the books I want to read . I really wish I could spend more time there !
