# WHYSJI – Sharing the SJI Significance in the Tan family
Being the third school established in Singapore when the nation was still an inconspicuous fishing village in 1852 , SJI has since educated generations of Josephians who have graduated with pride and left their mark all around the world . Every Josephian who had walked through her gates would have had their own SJI story to tell , which more often than not , would have inspired many others including their own children to join the school as well . It is not surprising that quite a number of our once teenager Josephians would choose to return to their alma mater to educate the next generation of Josephians . As such , their SJI story is always closely intertwined within the family . In this story , Mrs Yap Yin Shian speaks to Mr Jude Tan from the Class of 1990 , and two of his three children - Luke and Joan , who had also graduated from SJI , and what it was like to live and share the SJI Significance as a family .
