Developing a Growth Mindset : The Impact of Written Feedback in Creating Cultures of Thinking
– by Mr G . Karthick
A team consisting of teachers from four different disciplines across two academies , TCEF 2021 provided an opportunity for Ms Wong Wah Lee ( Geography , IBAM ), Ms Surjeet Kaur ( History / Social Studies , OPAM ), Mrs . Yap Yin Shian ( History / Social Studies , OPAM ), Ms . Nalini Moorthi ( History , IBAM ) and Mr . G . Karthick
( English , IBAM ) to conduct a workshop tracing the symbiotic relationship between assessment practices , disciplinary literacy and phenomenology .
The workshop has its roots in a pilot study conducted by the team between January and May 2021 . Motivated by a course led by Teacher Educators from the Harvard Graduate School of Education , these teachers ( who were participants of the course ), were eager to explore how critical thinking can be nurtured through writing attempted under timed conditions , with a focus on feedback practices . Well received by teachers who attended the workshop , the team was able to prove how the teaching of writing cuts across disciplines , with ample opportunities for varied disciplines to work together with the aim of nurturing skills highly valued in the 21st century economy . Moreover , the workshop proved how ideals related to the development of learning communities can be translated from belief to active practice , as long as the power of feedback is well understood by educators .
Teaching & Learning through the Assessment , Planning , Implementation and Evaluation ( APIE ) Framework
– by Ms Daisy Chia
“ Lorraine and I presented on Teaching and Learning through the Assessment , Planning , Implementation and Evaluation ( APIE ) Framework at the Teachers ' Conference and ExCEL Fest 2021 . Except for some minor technical glitches on the day itself , we were thankful everything else went well . Our participants were engaged and fielded a number of questions regarding how to cater to students with special educational needs , especially after Lorraine shared how she applied the APIE framework to help her student with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder adapt and cope better with learning in a classroom environment . Some of the participants were also forthcoming with their personal experiences of dealing with similar students , making the session interactive and meaningful for all of us . As the participants came wanting to learn practical ways of dealing with their students , we were thankful for the opportunity given to us to share with them our resources and experiences and hope they have benefited from this sharing .”
