Becoming a
Student Leader at SJI
By Daisy Chia
At SJI , we believe that leadership begins with the self . Every student must first be able to lead his own life meaningfully and then develop his potential to lead others in service .
The school seeks to equip every student with the capacity to be able to lead a values-centered life so as to build relationships and influence others positively in the community . SJI has crafted a roadmap to create opportunities for experiences and positions of leadership to nurture and develop their student dispositions , skills and attributes .
The SJI approach to nurturing student leaders integrates leadership skills , social engagement , Lasallian spirituality , and is centered on the school ’ s core values of Faith , Service and Community . Every student leader is an agent for the transmission of the Lasallian values of Faith , Service and Community to his fellow students whatever his role or position in the community .
In this issue of LUMEN , we feature the new members of the Prefect Executive Committee , and hear from these Secondary Three students their views on leadership .
Head Prefect for 2012 , Brandon Krygsman ( 331 ) recognizes that one is not a leader if he does not have followers . He feels strongly that since a leader requires his followers , he then needs to ‘ lead from the heart ’ so that his followers understands that he cares for them . From that understanding , there is a awareness that there is this mutual interdependence between the follower and the leader . Ultimately while vision and logic are essential characteristics of fine leaders , Brandon is convicted leading from the heart far supersedes these qualities .
This is also reinforced in James Stuart ’ s ( 323 ) belief that it is essential for a leader to know his peers and people from the ground personally . Knowing them by name and establishing a relationship with each one ensures
