Speaking Good English

By Ms Periasamy Angayarkanni

It is the goal of every English teacher in SJI to enable students to speak confidently and effectively to their audience . Hence , apart from teaching the mechanics of the English Language , 21st-century skills such as collaborating with peers on a daily basis using speech and creative thinking have gained greater focus in our classrooms .

At Lower Secondary level , every boy gets the opportunity during One Minute Gem , to stand up in front of his cohort and speak on a topic of his interest for one minute . The Upper Secondary level , on the other hand , holds panel discussions in classrooms on topics of social and academic interest . During these sessions , students find their voice while at the same time , show respect for their audiences ’ viewpoints . It is therefore perhaps , not surprising , that this year saw a greater number of Joesphians participating in nation-wide speech competitions like the Orator ’ s Trophy , Plain English Speaking Award and National Public Speaking Competition organised by ACJC , YMCA ( in partnership with MOE , National Library Board and Speak Good English Movement ) and Public Speaking Academy .
