6 LUMEN | FEATURE : TERCENTENARY CELEBRATIONS

SJI Enters

Singapore Book of Records

To commemorate the Tercentenary anniversary of our Founder , the SJI community set a record-breaking feat in Singapore for the largest hand-print banner ! For over a month , hundreds of staff and students placed their palm prints over 7 canvas panels measuring 18.9 metres by 8 metres . The expansive piece of artwork was completed on 29 March 2019 and was certified by the Singapore Book of Records . The banner is now displayed prominently at Block Solomon ( Indoor Sports Hall ), to remind us about De La Salle ' s mission that we celebrate , believe in and live fully in SJI .

Mr Alphonsus Gregory , who designed the banner , explained the significance of the elements on the artwork , ‘ The piece is a representation of the Journey of SJI ' s Lasallian community over the past 167 years . It is composed of the palm prints of the SJI Family , symbolising the unity in the community , as well as each member ’ s contribution towards it . The star represents the Signum Fidei - a sign of our faith with an inset of St John Baptist de La Salle - reminding us of the mission our Founder handed down to us . The tree sprouting to the right symbolises the growth of the Lasallian education in Singapore with hand-printed leaves created by our Lasallian educators . In the background , the rolling waves represent the journey of the 6 Brothers from France on the ship La Julie to Singapore , bringing along the Lasallian spirit that we now live by .’
