LUMEN | THE ST . JOSEPH ’ S INSTITUTION MAGAZINE

Contents

Lumen is Latin for light or lamp . It also means clearness and understanding .
We hope this magazine will throw light on the people , programmes , and philosophy of SJI .
Whether you are a student , a teacher , a parent , an old boy , or just someone who supports the school , may what we have to say help you understand the school and what it stands for and perhaps shed a little more light onto your path on the journey that is life .

On the cover : The ‘ Spirit of SJI ’ sculpture is shaped to resemble the masthead of a ship probably alluding to the ‘ La Julie ’, the ship that the first 6 Brothers sailed on to come to Malaya- Singapore . SJI is the oldest and first La Salle school set up in Asia in 1852 . These 6 Brothers ventured out with a spirit of courage and perseverance into the unknown . They could do this because of their faith in God and the community that they share with one another . Likewise , when the new students enter SJI , they are embarking into an unknown . They should therefore support one another as a class community and have faith to persevere .
