Answering the
Mater ’ s Call
It all began with a simple event called ,
“ Welcome Evening with Parent Volunteers ,” organised by the SJI
Parent Support Group ( PSG ) on 23 March 2018 .
After the welcome remarks from Principal Fr . Adrian Danker , and
Head of Levels Mr Genesius Chan and Mr
Jude Tan , came the appeal for parents to join the PSG and to volunteer at various school events . The response was very encouraging , to say the least !
From the mega-scale Mahalo Carnival event in April which saw more than 50 parents contributing to and running the PSG food stalls , to smaller events such as the Night Study where loving parents provided delicious evening snacks for students who stayed back for late night revisions , it was clear that our parents are very willing to roll up their sleeves to support the Josephians and the school .
Yet the biggest surprise was the response to the appeal from the school librarian , Mrs Boey Wah Fong , who sought help from the PSG for various tasks in the library . More than 20 parents signed up to help in the workroom and at the front desk .
To add on a touch of Asian flavour to the Singa-Lit Festival 2018 that showcased local as well as Southeast Asian literature , the PSG rounded up about 10 parents to organise an ASEAN Diaspora Food-Tasting session to add to the buzz of the event . And boy , did the parents cook up a storm ! Chicken Embutido from the Philippines , rice rolls from Vietnam , Lahpet ( a fermented tea leaf salad ) from Myanmar , banana

pengat and kueh pie tee from Malaysia and an assortment of kueh-kueh . The bite-size treats was a great visual and gastronomic complement to the literature week .
The contributions by our parent volunteers have been well received . We look forward to more engagements with the Josephian parents at the school ’ s events . If you are interested to join the SJI PSG or support our activities in any way , please email to sjipsgs @ sji . edu . sg
