Light as architecture of sustainability

Light as architecture of sustainability
Performance iN Lighting’ s lighting design for Marlegno’ s new headquarters
In this integrated project, light becomes a core part of the building’ s structure, serving as a strategic driver of sustainability and a key factor that elevates the quality of the work environment. Born from this vision, Marlegno’ s new headquarters in Calcinate( in the province of Bergamo, Italy) reflects their expertise in crafting innovative, prefabricated wooden solutions for the building industry, which save time, reduce costs, and deliver top-notch quality. Central to this approach is the lighting design by Performance iN Lighting, developed in close collaboration with the architectural team. This design was decisive in the process that led the building to achieve LEED Gold certification, with a total score of 65 points. Such recognition underscores not only the project’ s excellence in energy efficiency and environmental quality but also Marlegno’ s commitment to investing in a model of sustainable development – prioritizing occupant well-being and minimizing environmental impact throughout the building’ s entire lifecycle. Designed by architect Riccardo Minelli of ARCHIlabs, the Bergamo-based company’ s new Innovation Building Centre spans a total of 25,000 square metres and integrates production, administrative, and corporate functions. The building is characterised by its simple geometry, clean lines and an abundance of natural light. The architectural concept stems from the interplay between different yet complementary materials: wood, the company’ s defining feature, is combined with reinforced concrete and glass, in a balance of solidity, transparency, and lightness. The facade is formed by a reinforced concrete wall intersected by protruding wooden volumes,
punctuated by precise openings and splayed jambs that modulate the perception of the volumes and the entry of natural light in the interior spaces.
Light as a means of directing space In this context, the lighting project developed by Performance iN Lighting plays a central role. Artificial light is conceived as a natural extension of daylight and a tool capable of enhancing materials, accompanying the rhythms of work activities, and improving the perception of spaces. The objective is not only to light up a space but to create more comfortable, functional, and sustainable environments. The lighting has significantly impacted the overall LEED score thanks to the use of highefficiency lighting fixtures, the absence of mercury, the superior visual comfort guaranteed to occupants and the integration of smart lighting management systems. Dimmable solutions, paired with presence and natural light sensors, adjust light intensity according to the actual use of the spaces and environmental conditions, reducing consumption and improving the daily experience of the users.
A major boost came from several LEED credits. As regards the Interior Lighting category, DALIcontrolled fixtures with a CRI > 90 and UGR < 19 were installed, delivering exceptional visual comfort. For the Optimize Energy Performance category, high-efficiency systems significantly cut energy use, while in the Purchasing Lamps category, the choice of mercury-free fixtures further elevated the project’ s overall sustainability. This milestone underscores Performance iN Lighting’ s position as a trusted technology partner in high-impact, sustainable projects. It also highlights Marlegno’ s dedication to responsible innovation and forward-thinking growth, always mindful of the needs of future generations. LUCE 357 / COMPANIES REPORT 15
