Lighting, perception, and participatory design for urban safety
Lighting up a city is not just about illuminating it. It means making it accessible, it means ensuring that everyone can move through it feeling safe. That’ s where Cariboni Group’ s contribution to“ Safer Cities – Her Way” comes in. This program, which is supported by Transport for NSW( Australia), centers on the vital connection between light, perception, and inclusivity in public spaces. Over the last few years, urban safety has become an increasingly complex issue, in which the quality of public spaces cannot be separated from the experience of the people who use them. In this scenario, lighting serves as a fundamental infrastructure of trust. Far beyond mere functionality, lighting is an people to stay a little longer, and foster a sense of belonging to a place. The Safer Cities – Her Way program aligns with this framework through a place-based and gender-sensitive approach, engaging various Australian municipalities in pilot initiatives aimed at improving perceived safety, with a special focus on women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. Among these, the case of Bayside Council stands out as a methodology. The program was developed over an 18-month period through research, listening and co-design activities involving over 140 participants via surveys, walkshops, safety audits and interviews. Discussions between citizens, technical experts and the local authority helped to identify key issues relating to perceived safety, the quality of public spaces and their usability in the evening hours. The workshops highlighted, in particular, the need to improve night-time safety perception by increasing lighting and diversifying lighting solutions. develop integrated strategies implemented at the pilot sites of King Street Mall and Astridge Lane in Rockdale and Laycock Walk in Mascot. These strategies involved rethinking lighting, street furniture, greenery, and community engagement. The goal was to create spaces that are more legible, inclusive,
and welcoming after sunset. The project focused on targeted interventions designed to transform places of passage into recognisable, popular and comfortable spaces, even at night. Cariboni Group has been selected to utilising the Poli and Levante solutions with a colour temperature of 3000K. The lighting intervention has been designed as an integral component of the public space ' s quality. Its objectives include improving the legibility of pathways, reducing shadowed areas, ensuring uniform illumination, and minimizing glare. sense of safety and visual comfort. The choice of a warm white lighting further helps to create a more pleasant and familiar atmosphere, thus encouraging longer stays photo © Honeydieu Photography( credconsulting. com. au) photo haveyoursay. bayside. nsw. gov. au photo haveyoursay. bayside. nsw. gov. au
