Transparent about sustainability - how modular design meets the circular economy challenge extraction to disposal - as well as its carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions . Materials Mapping helps manufacturers understand the composition of the materials . For Cree Lighting Europe , this process led to the development of a new , innovative material called LiteStrong , which has more environmentally friendly thermal and material properties than aluminum .
Economia circolare / The circular economy

Sustainability . It ’ s a broad term used to describe actions which have a positive or neutral effect on the environment . There is no universally agreed definition for sustainability - but as lighting is a visual representation of energy use , it is imperative that our industry is seen to actively become greener .

Moving sustainability beyond LED LEDs have been a game-changer in the drive for greater energy efficiency driven by the economic need to reduce energy costs and the demand for low carbon buildings . But energy efficiency is just one narrow measure and sustainability means more than just lumens per watt . The Circular Economy proposes that we minimise our use of the world ’ s resources , cutting waste whilst reducing emissions . It proposes that at the end of a product ’ s life , any materials are reused and when they can ’ t , they are disposed of sustainably . Under these terms , if we are going to create the most sustainable lighting solution , then we need to consider the entire lighting toolkit . Take any luminaire and consider how it is made , what materials are used , and define that products ’ life span . Now apply the principles of the circular economy - reuse , recycle , reinvent .
The circular economy We assert that modular luminaire design is the future . Traditional lighting products are typically designed to be replaced entirely when they reach the end of their useful life or when newer , more energy-efficient technology is available . Modular luminaires can be easily upgraded and refurbished by replacing individual components to extend the useful product lifetime and to stay up-todate with the latest technological advancements . A modular design also reduces the cost and complexity of repairs , making it easier and more affordable to refurbish existing products .
What sustainability means in practice Modular design extends the useful product lifetime by facilitating upgrades and refurbishments . We ’ ve embraced this concept and now offer several product ranges made from modular components , which all come with a 20- year warranty . To reach this point , our business has actively considered how our product ranges are designed , manufactured , used , and recycled . This work starts with a Life Cycle Assessment ( LCA ), when the entire lifecycle of each product is evaluated for its environmental impact - from raw material
But this is not all . Whenever we develop new products , we consider all aspects of sustainability - from where we purchase and how we transport components , to how we can reduce the packaging . There is a lot more work to be done despite taking on board the Circular Economy sustainability challenges . Today , the introduction of sustainable practices into all aspects of a business is expected . We are happy to challenge and support our peers across the lighting industry - so ask yourself , what are you doing and what could you do to make your business more sustainable ?
Cree Lighting Europe is a market-leading manufacturer , producing the highest quality LED lighting solutions for cityscapes and suburban streets , commercial properties , industrial settings , and under canopy . Sustainability has been part of their DNA for a long time - from introducing reusable packaging many years ago , to gaining their first Dark Skies accreditation in 2018 . Since then , they have gained ISO 14001 certification , joined Zhaga , worked closely with their supply chain , and introduced modular luminaires that can be repaired and broken down into component parts for recycling .
