Being a manufacturer at the time of the Green Economy
Translating the theories of the Green Economy into practice is a strategic and economic challenge for luminaire manufacturers . However , the transition to a circular model is the only way to protect the environment and achieve a sustainable economic development . As a manufacturer , we have implemented a transformation process that has led us to be one among the first in Italy to obtain the Environmental Product Declaration ( EPD ) for all our luminaires . An increasingly selective requirement for tenders and projects funded by the European Community , the EPD gives an objective and transparent description of the sustainability and impact of the product in terms of resource consumption and CO2e emissions . We leave the telling of this journey to the words of our CEO , Cristiano Ravaioli , who in 2020 launched a much broader process of corporate renewal aimed at further strengthening our company ’ s competitiveness and innovation .
“ For GMR ENLIGHTS , innovation means interpreting the current and future needs of cities through its lighting systems . Today , cities mainly require two things : reduction of environmental impact and digital transition . We chose to design and produce our luminaires in accordance with the principles of the circular economy , so as to reduce the environmental impact of public lighting without compromising the well-being of those who inhabit urban spaces in terms of visual comfort and safety . Translating the theories of the Green Economy into practice required a shift in planning and a renewal of production processes . Not only do we have newly designed lighting systems , but the entire range of our luminaires has been redesigned for a more efficient use of materials and energy during production , for proper disposal at the end of their lifespan and to optimise the energy resources used by cities . We have worked towards using up to 75 % recycled materials , testing their strength and paying particular attention to the durability of the casing by using high quality surface treatments . The need to increase the lighting performance of the luminaires required a technological update of the optical systems , checking the efficiency of the system and the effectiveness of the optical distributions . Each of our luminaires can be completely disassembled , so that materials can be recycled at the end of their life , and we have extended the concept of modularity to the entire range , meaning the possibility of easily replacing optical and electronic components for continuous technological updating . On the production side , the entire process had to be adapted to a 4.0 sustainable , automated and interconnected industry model . We have laid out an investment plan that in this first phase has led to the replacement of obsolete machinery and to a rationalisation of assembly operations , improving the use of resources and facilitating the work of our employees . In the forthcoming period we will be working on the completion of an integrated information system to reduce management time and the risk of errors . The production , 100 % powered by renewable energy sources , is based at our Bertinoro factory and 90 % of the components are designed in-house and supplied by Italian partners , thus greatly reducing the environmental and economic burden of transport . We wanted to certify our commitment by providing evidence of the sustainability of our products . From May 2022 , the entire range of our lighting systems will receive the Environmental Product Declaration . This will document the environmental impact of the luminaire ’ s production and define its use of resources ( energy , water and raw materials ), waste production and CO 2 e emissions throughout its life cycle . Our next goal is to use this design and production approach to create city-sized smart solutions : systems that , through the massive integration of devices and functions , will increasingly make each public lighting object part of a complex infrastructure and service .”
