Getting to know the Greeks on Lawrence Tech’ s campus
Initiation- The act of becoming an active brother or sister in a fraternity or sorority. This usually takes place in the form of a ritual.
Founders Day- A day honoring the members that established the fraternity or sorority and celebrating the date the organization was founded on.
NPHC VOCABULARY
National Pan-Hellenic Council( NPHC)- The NPHC governs all other Greek organizations that do not fall under the IFC’ s jurisdiction. Fraternities that are governed by NPHC include: Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Sororities that are governed by NPHC include: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.,
Frat- Short for fraternity brother. Members of NPHC fraternities sometimes refer to their own brothers as " frat, but it is more commonly used towards brothers of another chapter.
Soror- Short for sorority sister. Members of NPHC sororities sometimes refer to their other sisters as " soror” but is more commonly used towards brothers of another chapter.
Neophytes- Also known as " neo / neos ", these are the newest initiated members into any NPHC organization’ s chapter.
Prophytes- The older members of any NPHC organizations chapter. Once new members( Neos) become initiated into the organization, the previous members that came in before the newly initiated neos automatically become Prophytes.
Probate Show- A public show presenting the newly initiated neophytes of an NPHC organization to their very own campus. At a probate show you might see steps, chants, strolls, singing, and celebrating. You may also see people from other schools.
Strolling- A routine, in-sync dance that could consist of different repetitive / rhythmic moves, hand signs, and chants. Members of NPHC organizations usually perform a stroll in a singular line, commonly performed by circling around a party or show. Strolls can be performed with or without music. Strolling is commonly performed at parties, probate shows, step shows, or stroll shows.
Stepping- A way for NPHC organizations to celebrate their heritage, culture, and success. Stepping can be done at the exhibition or competition level. Stepping is done at probate shows, step shows, or stroll shows.
