Getting to know the Greeks on Lawrence Tech’ s campus
Greek Council( GC) – Governing body for all Greek organizations on campus. Organize Fall / Spring Recruitment, Winter Carnival, Greek week and registering social events as well handle any Greek disputes. Executive board consists of: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Judicial and Public Relations.
Interfraternity Council( IFC)- The IFC is the governing council for all fraternities on campus that do not fall under the NPHC. An elected executive board consisting of a: President, Recruitment, Treasurer, Public Relations, Scholarship and Judicial. The IFC may also appoint various committee chairs for social and / or service events throughout the year. Fraternities that are governed by IFC include: Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity Inc., Phi Kappa Upsilon Fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Sigma Pi Fraternity International, and Theta Tau Professional Engineering Fraternity
Sorority Council( SC) – A representative from each sorority on campus meet monthly and plan all sororities events; social, philanthropy, and fundraiser.
Order of Omega( Ω)- An International honors society for Greek leaders; represents the top 3 % of Greeks on campus.
Bid- A formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority. Although you may receive several bids, you may only accept a bid from one organization.
Bidding- The act of giving a bid from a fraternity or sorority.
Pinning- Once you accept a bid, you will be invited to“ pinning”: a formal way of accepting your bid to join that organization.
Ritual- A formal ceremony that is usually private, only open to members of a fraternity or sorority.
Mixer- A social event usually held with at least one other Greek organization.
Pledging / New Member Education- A period of‘ probationary’ membership in which‘ pledges’ or‘ new members’ are required to learn about the organization that they wish to join.
Pledge / New Member- A person who has formally accepted a bid through pinning, but has yet to be initiated into that organization.
Active- An undergraduate brother or sister of a fraternity or sorority who is neither a pledge / new member or an alumnus.
Alumni- A member who has completed their time in the fraternity or sorority as an undergraduate member, may have alumnae status, usually through a ritual. Alumni members are usually graduates, but this rule does not apply to all alumnus.
