Our cities are becoming more congested by the day. Statistics of a TomTom survey undertaken in 2011 in our neighbouring Johannesburg, are worrying. It was found that 78% of 3,8 million drivers are stuck in severe traffic jams daily. About 342 000 (10%) are forced to cancel meetings and more than 40% of employees are 15-30 minutes late for work. Congestion adds about 60% to travel time, and in addition, more than 435 000 children are stranded each day owing to traffic jams which result in guardians arriving late.
