While he kept his first boat for nine years,
it was not long before Guy upgraded to a
5” colour unit. Three years later he bought
an HDS 5 Gen 1 combo unit, followed by
the Gen 2 version – and he changed his
boat for the bigger and newer model with
a 60hp motor.
“Having my own boat and fishfinder was
key to getting my fishing career going – I
was no longer dependent on others and
could put in as much time and practise as
I needed.”
Lowrance has travelled with him to three
World Championship events in USA and
Portugal. “One of the first things I pack is
my Lowrance unit, transducer and specially
adapted pole with bracket – to use in
competitions overseas – because you just
don’t know what you’re going to get in terms of fishfinding equipment. Apart
from needing all sorts of skills to adapt to unfamiliar conditions, it’s all the more
difficult if you’re relying on unfamiliar equipment.” He said.
His recent stint in Portugal prompted Guy
to change his unit to a Lowrance Elite Ti
9 unit. “Many of the guys there had 12”
units with SideScan – giving them a distinct
advantage and I realised that if I want to
stay ahead of my game and maximise my
chances – I have to have the best unit for
my needs. After discussing it with Liz from
Lowrance SA, the Ti 9 proved to be just
that. “Life is so much easier now, especially
diving on sand - I can pick up structure on
either side that I wouldn’t see otherwise.”
“The bigger screen splits three-ways and
I have sonar, downscan and sidescan.
Now, while diving at Aliwal Shoal or other
hotspots – it’s great to see structure from
different angles. We all have the areas we
know best - but now I can see even more
and can pick up rocks and other structure.”
