reactions to their real-world circumstances are varied . The spectrum spans the increasing isolation , depression and ultimately suicide of a pediatric specialist in his prime ( chapter 6 ), through the resolve of individuals to branch out on their own in rural practices where their presence , though welcomed , was not always sustainable . Some individuals were able to network with like-minded physicians . Two such groups successfully created viable specialty clinics which outperform local hospital out patient services . It is only fair to note that in these latter groups , success was significantly aided by administrators who bought in to the concept and physicians within the groups who were willing to undertake the arduous and sometimes thankless task of learning about and undertaking the nitty gritty of business negotiations .
The book is available in hard copy as well as an audio version . I downloaded it from Apple Books . It runs almost 10 hours and Dr . Dean herself is the narrator . She has an empathetic style and clearly got to know all her subjects well . I felt drawn into each of the histories as I am sure most readers will .
Dr . Amin is a retired diagnostic radiologist .
The first part of the book ’ s title intrigued me . If I Betray These Words . Apparently when Dr . Dean was thinking about a title she read all the many versions of the Hippocratic Oath ; the Geneva Document - the World Medical Association Oath of the Healer ; the AMA code of Medical Ethics ; The Osteopathic Oath ; the Maimonides Prayer . She discovered a modern translation of the Hippocratic Oath written in 2010 by Amelia Arenas and published in Boston University ’ s publication , Arion . I looked up this translation , which has profound implications . The words used by Dr . Dean are found within the final sentence .
