CALLED TO SERVE

Science : We Explain Things !

16 LOUISVILLE MEDICINE

As members of the community where we work and live , many of us search for ways to become more involved and to give back . I ’ ve enjoyed giving my time in different ways throughout my life , and three years ago , I found myself interested in joining the Board of Directors for a local organization where I could put my skills , interests and connections to good use . I came to the Board of Directors at the Kentucky Science Center in 2020 with a lifelong interest in the organization and its mission to encourage people of all ages to “ Do Science ” in engaging , educational and entertaining ways to inspire a lifetime of learning .

The exploration and discovery present in science fascinated me as a child at Whitney Young Elementary , where my first visits to what is now the Kentucky Science Center began as school field trips . My high school science teacher inspired me to grow through different experiences , so as a teenager , I volunteered at the Kentucky Science Center ’ s gift shop . That experience opened me up to an interest in learning more about people , backgrounds and environments and the sciences . by GIAVONNE RONDO , MD
Science matters to me as a physician , a mom and a businesswoman . This is what drove my decision to join the Kentucky Science Center ’ s Board of Directors . Being a doctor requires constant learning , questioning and practice , which I also see reflected in the curiosity and growth of my daughter . My practice is dedicated to improving our world from a medical perspective , reaching and treating people where they are . I use science daily to diagnose medical conditions , determine appropriate technology to diagnose and treat , decide upon a treatment plan and analyze patient data for optimal care .
This is my third year as part of the Kentucky Science Center ’ s Board of Directors . As part of the Board , I ’ ve enjoyed the opportunity to engage the community with the organization ’ s mission and experiences . Recently , I was able to connect the Science Center with another organization I work with . I also had the opportunity to familiarize visiting physicians with the facility and its offering , and I highlighted the science of play through filming an episode of Health for Your Mind , Body , and Spirit at the Kentucky Science Center . Last year , I served as the Board ’ s Development Chair , working with the Science Center to develop fundraising plans and strategies to encourage other Board members to share the organization ’ s mission and make requests from potential supporters . This year , I am serving as Vice Chair , and I am excited to see the organization grow to serve all Kentuckians and Southern Indiana in new and innovative ways — encouraging everyone to Do Science !
