Medical credentialing dates back to Persia in 1000 BC , as outlined by the Cult of Zoroaster . In ancient Persia , to qualify for licensure , a physician had to treat three heretics : if they lived , that qualified the physician to practice medicine for a lifetime . We don ’ t mandate the treatment of heretics any longer , but the core truth of credentialing remains the same , to ensure incoming physicians are competent in their chosen field and can safely and efficiently practice medicine .
We have seen the headlines where a teenager impersonated a physician and the podcast-turned-hit-TV-show Dr . Death . These serve to remind us that credentialing is necessary for patient safety .
The GLMS MedCentral department provides this service for our community partners and allows our members to demonstrate their competency . MedCentral also allows our members to go through credentialing at multiple facilities with one application , and at a steep discount .

With physicians in our region changing employment at a faster rate , GLMS is a repository for our members ’ information and reduces the burden of time and effort required for credentialing . This is such a boon when a provider changes employers , as well as every two years at the time of reappointment .
Credentialing also serves as a revenue generator for other programs and services of the medical society , which helps keep your membership rates low , and allows us to provide several services at little or no cost to our members .
