INTRODUCING MONALISA TAILOR, MD, GLMS PRESIDENT Dr. Adrianna Masters wedding in 2016 Medical School Graduation, 2010 26 LOUISVILLE MEDICINE ADRIANNA HENSON MASTERS, MD, PHD FRIEND SINCE MEDICAL SCHOOL “Are you the MonaLisa02?” the friendly woman making delicious donuts at Flea Off Market asked one Saturday. My humble best friend gave a smile to one of many adoring Twitter followers in confirmation. This is not an uncommon occurrence when you’re hanging with the Monalisa Tailor (@ TheMonalisa02). Over the past 14 years, it has been my pleasure to know Mona. She is caring, compassionate and incredibly approachable. She connects with people of all walks of life and has a knack for finding common ground in unexpected places. When I met Mona during our anatomy lab while up to our elbows in learning opportunities, I thought she was studious and quiet. It was not immediately apparent what an important role she would have in my life. Over the years I learned that she has so many talents. She is so much more than a brilliant physician and a Twitter phenomenon. As we grew closer, I cherished Saturdays when we would leave without an agenda and see where the day would take us. It could be almost anywhere, and I knew it would be fun with Mona. Some of our favorite things to do together are to walk or jog down Frankfort Avenue together, preferably with my dog Beaker, bargain shopping through craft markets and thrift shops and enjoying many of the fabulous independent restaurants in this city we both love. She loves art, music, cooking and all things Harry Potter. She also sees the beauty in unexpected places. We’ve even made art together out of recyclables. Although on the outside we may look different, have different backgrounds and come from different parts of the country, we found so much in common in ourselves and our families. Our families both taught us to value your relationships with other people, to thoughtfully care for those in need and to work hard. They expected nothing less than perfect marks in school, and taught us that we must search always for the best bargains/ coupons. My parents adore Mona and have even given her a place of honor in our family tradition of the sandwich hug. They never fail to chime in that they miss their spicy brown mustard when they hear us talking on the phone. She is exceptionally passionate about caring for her patients, about education, politics and leadership. If you happen to be thinking of calling her during a presidential debate during election season…put the phone down, suitors have been fired for less. At the end of the day, Mona is the friend that everyone wants to have. She is the type of friend that when you are freaking out about wedding decorations and the small details that literally no one remembers anything about, she’s the one that travels hundreds of miles to visit you for the weekend to help you get your stuff together. These qualities lent themselves superbly to her inevitable rise to her upcoming presidency for GLMS. She is not simply a fabulous physician and community leader, but a truly beautiful person.
