GLMS FOUNDATION GOLF SCRAMBLE
2019 GLMS FOUNDATION
SCHOLARSHIP GOLF SCRAMBLE
AUTHOR Amanda Edmondson
T
he Greater Louisville Medical Society (GLMS) Foundation
hosted their 9 th annual Golf Scramble at Hurstbourne
Country Club on September 30, 2019, with a total of 18
teams competing for this year’s trophy and the pride of
having their names inscribed on that coveted hardware.
While this event brings golfers out for a day of fun
competition, this event isn’t just about them. For the past
nine years, the GLMS Foundation has sponsored the tournament
to help to lighten the load of fourth year medical students’ debt.
This event is about investing in the future of medicine, to help
these soon-to-be physicians go into residency with a little less
worry about paying back medical school debt. To date, our Society’s
foundation has awarded $228,000 to 48 students.
Past scholarship recipient Elizabeth Veasey, MD commented on
being awarded the scholarship during medical school. “I am very
thankful for this as it was a great relief in a time of financial need.
I’m happy to now be a part of this same organization, as a resident
physician in Louisville!”
This year $25,000 in scholarships were awarded to five future
physicians: Logan Carney, Jamie Doctrow, Jacob Hoerter, Ashlee
Margheim and Jenny Overfield.
The championship team was sponsored by RH Clarkson
Insurance Agency and included David Clarkson, Mike Kaelin,
Damon Thurman and Marty Walthers.
This year’s “Worst Putter Award” – sponsored by Mary G. Barry,
MD, in remembrance of her father, journalist Mike Barry – went
to Logan Carney for a second prize of the day.
We are very grateful to the businesses, individuals, and GLMS
and Alliance members who make this happen year after year. Help
our GLMS Foundation continue to invest in the future of medicine
by sponsoring a team for the 10 th annual newly named Doctor’s Cup,
or by making a donation at glms.org/foundation. Be sure to save
the date for next year’s Doctor’s Cup on September 28, 2020.
