T
his year has been both wonderful and inspiring, and I
am proud of the Alliance’s accomplishments. Every year
is a year of new beginnings, as well as a time to renew
dormant friendships. Our Alliance programs this year
were designed to be both fun and informative, and to
encourage support among physicians’ families.
We started in August by having the GLMS Alliance partner with
the KMA Alliance for a fashion show and luncheon at the University
Club on UofL’s campus. After the fashion show, there was a basket
auction, and the proceeds of $5,500 went to the Ephraim McDowell
House in Danville, Ky. At the end of last year, the GLMS Alliance
gave $1,350 to paint and repair the children’s room at the McDowell
House, in addition to $300 donated earlier.
In September 2017, the GLMS Foundation Scholarship Golf
Outing was held at the Hurstbourne Country Club. GLMS Alliance
donated $5,000 for a UofL Medical Student Scholarship and $500 to
sponsor a hole on the course. The recipient of the scholarship was
medical student Taylor Hodge. Also in September, the GLMSA had
a tour of the Speed Art Museum, particularly the exhibition titled
“Southern Accent – Seeking the American South in Contemporary
Art,” led by the docent Lois Powell.
In October and November, the Alliance carried out a Holiday
Sharing Card fundraiser that raised over $1,900. Donations from
the fundraiser went to medical schools through the KMA Alliance
Foundation Scholarship funds.
In December, the Alliance enjoyed the holiday celebration at
the home of Dr. George and Karin Sonnier.
Ministries for the third annual Share the Love Shindig at Wildwood
Country Club. There, everyone enjoyed dinner and dancing with
music provided by The Monarchs.
In March, the Alliance met at The Woman’s Club of Louisville for
the 80 th Annual No Jury Art Show, the longest running art show in
Kentucky. The group had lunch and heard from judge and speaker
Jim Cantrell. For the first time, Churchill Downs chose a Kentucky
artist, Jim Cantrell, for the official posters of the Kentucky Oaks and
Kentucky Derby for 2018.
In April, the Alliance partnered with the Zonta Club of Louisville
on “Millionaires Row” for the opening night at Churchill Downs.
In May, GLMSA had the final meeting of the year. We met at Big
Spring Country Club. Mrs. Leeann Manganello was our speaker,
and she discussed the Women Empowered program that she and
her husband, Professor Allan Manganello, teach.
I want to thank the GLMS Alliance for a wonderful year, and
for the opportunity to have been the Alliance president. It was my
honor and privilege to have served the GLMS Alliance for the last
two years and also to have served on the GLMS Board.
