In addition to our work with U of L, GLMS physicians maintain
essential partnerships with the GLMS Alliance, The Healing Place,
Doctors & Lawyers for Kids, Supplies Over Seas and Surgery on
Sunday Louisville.
In the latter, Erica Sutton, MD, and countless other physicians,
nurses and hospital staff have done excellent work helping un-
derserved Louisville residents receive the surgical care they need.
Physicians are also very active in the work of the GLMS Foundation,
which had a monumental year.
PLANNING FOR NEW CHARITABLE
ENDEAVORS
The sale of the Old Medical School Building to the Ronald Mc-
Donald House Charities of Kentuckiana was, of course, a major
undertaking completed by the GLMS Foundation this year, but it
was far from the only one.
The Foundation collaborated with Hand in Hand Ministries
once again in sponsorship of an annual medical mission trip to
Managua, Nicaragua. Over the last several years, physicians who
travel to the disadvantaged country have taken much needed sup-
plies and services, and improved the living conditions of countless
Nicaraguan residents.
Back in Kentucky, the Foundation hosted a scholarship initiative
and golf event for U of L School of Medicine students. The 6 th annual
GLMS Foundation Scholarship Golf Outing awarded $25,000
($5,000 each) to five promising medical students, and another
$5,000 scholarship was awarded by the GLMS Alliance. The two
organizations have now given away a combined total of $138,000
to students thanks to the efforts of GLMS physicians, health care
organizations and local businesses.
This year’s golf outing welcomed 90 physicians, business pro-
fessionals and sponsors to the Hurstbourne Country Club. After
braving light rain in the morning, they provided a warm welcome
for the students who received their awards in the afternoon. Prior

to the golf tournament, a raffle and silent auction were held by the
GLMS Foundation. Both raised significant funds for next years’
scholarships. This year’s GLMS Foundation and Alliance Scholar-
ship winners were Lisa Fioretti, Clifford Freeman, Druv Sharma,
Katelynn Bachman, Travis Shutt and Matthew Woeste.
In other exciting news, the GLMS Foundation was selected for the
exclusive Ignite Louisville program, a subset of Leadership Lou-
isville where young professionals partner with a non-profit agency
to overview its mission and services and accomplish its stated goal.
The Ignite Team has been working with the GLMS Foundation for
nearly six months. The fruits of their labor will be unveiled soon.
Another of GLMS’ closest partners, the Kentucky Medical Asso-
ciation (KMA), shares many of the same physician members and
an ethos of constantly advocating for the improvement of health
services for Kentucky patients. Physicians gathered at the KMA’s
Annual Meeting in late August to pass resolutions which KMA
will advocate for in the years to come. Of the more th
