LOP MAG 'Uncovering Cleveland' FINAL | Page 9

WOW! I'm excited to be a new blogger here in the city of Cleveland. You know me as Curvyinthe216 aka Yolanda Miller. Me being the Curvy Girl about town we will travel around our champion city exploring what is going on in our city and beyond from my view.

What is it to be Curvy, full figured or plus sized in today’s society? I’m speaking of everything from dating, shopping, going to the movie, going to school...

In today’s world of bullying and body shaming, it is imperative that our young ladies see themselves in everyday settings, as well as Television and in print. Many influential designers and clothing stores in the fashion industry are quickly learning that the curvy dollar is a mighty dollar and is here to stay. In 2015 the plus size clothing industry made over 17 billion dollar in sales. With stores like Lane Bryant, a leader in the Plus Size Clothing industry, using hash tags such as #Imnoangel, and #plusisequal lets the industry know that the Plus Size woman is not ashamed but rather that she is strong and beautiful. Designer Christian Siriano has provided Lane Bryant with runway designs that the Curvy Woman of today is looking for. Torrid who carries the Rebel Wilson line and an array of cutting edge clothing is focusing on today’s full figured fashionista. JC Penny has launched the Plus Size Line by Project Runway’s first Plus Size designer winner Ashley Tipton. This Line is propelling JC Penny to the top of the plus size industry. This year for the first time ever, multiple plus size models were walking for designers. Christian Siriano had an unprecedented total of 4 plus size models!

It is important to show our young girls while you can commit to be healthy and fit that we are not all going to be a size 4 or 6. In today’s fashion world a size 10 is considered to be plus size with the size 8 soon to be considered as well. With women such as, Megan Trainer, Jill Scott, Rebel Wilson, Gabrielle Sidibe, Adele, Queen Latifah, Amber Riley, Jasmine Sullivan and with attention on Ashley Graham and Tess Holiday - young women and girls now see themselves and can be proud!

I’m Curvyinthe216 and you never know where you will see me, let me know where you are… perhaps I’ll meet you there. Do you have an idea for a story? Would you like to express your opinion or just say hello?
