Bootlegging is defined as the illegal disribution of a banned substance. This was a big problem in the 1920's since there was a prohibition of alcohol due to its unhealthiness. Many people such as the characters dipicted in the American novel The Great Gatsby were bootleggers and made a huge fortune off of something so simple as selling something that was illegal. Alcohol obviously became very hard to get and manufacture during this time, so it would be made secretely and sold in the same manner. Someone to get caught with this crime could do a lot of time in jail and have all of their posessions stripped of them. I do not think a crime like this should be put in place because drinking is part of the American lifestyle. We live in America where we should not be restricted about what we can and cannot drink. That is a straight violation of the 1st Amendment to the United States Constitution which means we should be able to drink whatever we want whenever we want. The bootlegging business is not a bad things because it still helps people relax and enjoy a good time with their friends. If Gatsby was not in the bootlegging business, he would not stand a chance with Daisy because nobody would know who he was and he wouldn't have the things to throw a party. It is necessary that we continue to pursue American traditions such as drinking and the legal distribution of alcohol.
