38  LMS  Issue 4 | 2014 Rapid Testing Food Adulteration C onsumers should be aware of every aspect of their food, including the ingredients, processing and handling. Thus, there is a need for testing to ensure peace of mind. PerkinElmer’s porcine detection kits provide rapid, on-the-spot screening for pork in other types of meat before sending samples to the laboratory for confirmatory analysis. Two detection kits are now available, one for raw and the other for processed meat, and they both deliver quick results with high sensitivity. Certifying agencies, contract laboratories and food manufacturers will find this very helpful in assessing the purity of meat products. The immunochroma tography based test strips are easy to use with a control to clearly indicate positive or negative results within 15 minutes. The sensitivity of the tests are 0.05% and 0.5% for raw meat and processed meat respectively. PerkinElmer has been developing analytical instrumentation for more than 70 years and remains on the forefront of food analysis. Their introduction of new technology such as the NexION® 300 ICP-MS, AxION™ 2 Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer and Clarus® SQ 8 gas chromatograph mass spectrometer demonstrates continued commitment to the market to further develop technology to improve laboratory capability and productivity. ⚛ PerkinElmer High-performance Add sample extraction liquid Preprocessing (5 minutes) Shake well Dip briefly and lay flat 15 minutes Ready, Steady ... GO! Positive Result Negative Result Reliable Results in a Flash T T he Multiwave GO presents a novel concept in microwave-heated instru ments for fast and routine leaching and digestion applications. It is a compact instrument, combining the benefits of multimode ovens (high vessel capacity) and mono-mode microwave systems (small footprint) into one single device. The proven SMART VENT technology using HVT50 vessels allows for the digestion of high sample weights. When operating in ‘multi vessel’ mode the instrument automatically determines the number of used vessels and ensures smooth operation. The new ‘single vessel’ mode supports quick digestion of individual samples and facilitates method optimisation. The Multiwave GO features: • A directed multimode cavity, which is a self-adjusting microwave field for highly efficient turbo heating in a compact system (patent pending) • Single and multi vessel mode • Temperature programs such as noninvasive temperature measurement and robust temperature control • SMART VENT, which allows for temperature-independent, pressureactivated venting • Easy handling through vessels with hand-tight closure (‘2 turns 2 tightness’) and a light-weight fluoropolymer-coated aluminium rotor • Easy operation with intuitive software • Built-in-cooling system with silent turbo cooling and guided airflow. ⚛ Anton Paar Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd Contact: Andre van Zyl Tel: 011-021-5165/6/7 Email: info.za@anton-paar.com Contact: Chris de Jager Tel: 011-564-2400 Email: info.za@perkinelmer.co he Eralytics EraFlash is the one of the most flexible flashpoint testers for reliable measurements of all kinds of liquids and solids. A small footprint, true portability and its rugged aluminum design are ideal for stationary and mobile laboratories. It is also the instrument of choice for demanding tests, including fresh and used oil analysis (fuel dilution curve measurement), product specif ications, transport classifications, forensic analysis, FAME (biodiesel), recycled fuels and the hazardous waste (RCRA). All Eralytics analysers use an intuitive menu structure that is easy to navigate. Samples need no prior preparation and measurements are done fully automated. Data can be directly saved to USBs for further processing. The data format is compatible with most PC spreadsheets, such as Microsof t © Excel, and customised printout designs are available for easy direct printing. The cost sav ings for expensive samples and for waste disposal as well as the easy cleaning due to the small sample volume make the EraFlash the preferred flashpoint tester for the f lavours and fragrances, cosmetics, paints and varnishes, and bitumen and asphalt industries.
