After meeting the team at Morgan Lewis & Bockius, one gets the sense that they take collaboration very seriously. Moreover, the group’s chair, Stephen Paul Mahinka, has helped expand the group, as well as integrate the practice on a level that only few firms can match. Mahinka is known as a “very versatile and intelligent lawyer” and has worked with a large number of government agencies in both regulatory and antitrust matters—a unique practice that very few practitioners can mirror. Partner Kathleen Sanzo leads the firm’s FDA practice, and is an authority on compliance issues. Recently, Morgan Lewis bolstered its regulatory team by bringing in partner Gary Yingling from K&L Gates. Yingling, described by peers as “an attorney who has helped shape the food and drug industry,” comes with over three decades of experience working in the sector, provides another perspective to an already proficient practice group. For finance and transactional issues, cohead of Morgan Lewis’s mergers and acquisitions group Steven Navarro, has handled several mid-market and large deals, including representing a Japanese pharmaceutical company in its acquisition of a development stage vaccine company for up to $250 million. Additionally, Partners Fahd Riaz and Randall Sunberg are experts in assisting companies in licensing and collaboration agreements. Sunberg has worked with Merck and GlaxoSmithKline in separate collaboration agreements, while Riaz represented Shire Pharmaceuticals in collaboration with Amicus Therapeutics worth up to $440 million. Anchoring Morgan Lewis’s dynamic industry group is the firm’s government investigation litigation team. “Few attorneys do the level of work that he is capable of,” praises one competitor about John Dodds. His practice centers on the representation of organizations and individuals in government investigations and he has been working in this type of litigation for nearly two decades.
