Latham & Watkins’s outstanding capabilities in financial and transactional affairs put them among the market’s top firms. Led by partners Alan Mendelson, Charles Hoyng, Judith Hasko, and Charles Ruck, the firm has what one competitor calls “the best corporate team in the country.” Mendelson is one of the most highly-regarded names in the industry for his corporate practice. “When I think about corporate life sciences work, he is the first person who pops into my head,” explains one peer about Mendelson. Clients approve of his work, too. “He knew what we needed and knew the kind of deals that were necessary for our company to move forward with,” explains one client. “And on top of all of that, he was one of the most responsive attorneys we have ever worked with.” Along with other corporate partners at the firm, Mendelson played a key role in a collaboration agreement between Coherus Biosciences and Daiichi Sankyo. Partner Maximilian Grant co-chairs the firm’s Global Intellectual Property group, which in recent years, has played a major role in some of the industry’s biggest patent litigations. Patent litigator Richard Bress argued in front of the Supreme Court in a landmark, methods of use patent case, Prometheus Labs v. Mayo Collaborative Services. “He is easily one of the top trial attorneys in the country and I expect to see him in more high-profile patent cases,” believes one of Bress’s rivals. On the regulatory front, John Manthei co-chairs the Global Healthcare and Life Sciences practice and is a preeminent authority on all things FDA – an important asset that rounds out the firm’s practice group. He currently serves as outside FDA counsel to the Medical Device Manufacturers Association and does top-tier regulatory work for pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients as well. The government enforcement practice displays more of the firm’s outstanding litigation capabilities. Latham’s attorneys are at the center of government investigation proceedings including healthcare fraud and Foreign Corrupt Practice cases. Partner Daniel Meron joined the firm after working as the General Counsel for the Department of Health and Human Services.
