Hogan’s well-rounded FDA group cements its impressive standing among full-service firms that lack the regulatory expertise that Hogan can offer its clients. Attorneys Robert Brady and Beth Roberts lead an extremely versatile team, stocked with attorneys who focus on specific industry categories, including medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or biotechnology. Partners Jonathan Kahan and Janice Hogan are viewed by colleagues as “excellent medical device attorneys” and have helped create one of the industry’s strongest FDA groups focused on devices. Leading the pharmaceutical and biotechnology practice is partner Philip Katz, who is recognized for his work in both domestic and international markets. Additionally, Hogan Lovells has a strong presence on both coasts with a leading finance and transactional practice in both the Silicon Valley and the Baltimore offices. By assisting emerging life sciences companies with a wide-range of corporate matters, partner Laura Berezin has garnered an impressive reputation for the Silicon Valley office. Over the past few years she represented several companies on large public offerings and counseled clients on significant mergers and acquisitions. In Baltimore, global cohead of the life sciences group Asher Rubin handles a variety of corporate affairs. The government enforcement team at the firm brings decades of experience of working within government entities. Partners like Virginia Gibson have spent time as a federal prosecutor working in some of the industry’s key districts, including the District of Delaware, a hotbed of Hatch-Waxman activity. The enforcement team represented a medical device manufacturer in a voluntary disclosure, negotiation, and settlement of bribery allegations with the US Department of Justice and the Securities Exchange Commission. Partner Barry Thompson is a big reason for the success of Hogan Lovell’s product liability practice. He has participated in some of the industry’s well-known products litigation, most recently serving as national and trial counsel for Boehringer Ingelheim in litigation involving Mirapex®, a Parkinson’s disease medication. “You won’t meet a nicer attorney in the industry,” says one colleague about Thompson. “But he is also one of the most tenacious litigators in the product liability space.”
